Africa's Zozibini Tunzi won the Miss
Universe 2019 Sunday at an event held in
Atlanta, United States, with 88 candidates.
Upon
receiving the crown, he made statements against
prejudice, racism and machismo. "It is an
absolute honor to represent, as black and African,
inclusion and diversity."
Second
place went to Madison Anderson of Puerto Rico, and
third place went to Mexican Sofía Aragón. Tunzi
is the third South African to take the title after
the victories of Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (2017) and
Margaret Gardiner (1978).
She
is also the first black woman to win the
competition since 2011, when Angola's Leila Lopes
won in Brazil.
Tunzi
talked about the difficulties of black women in
looking beautiful. “Society has been
programmed for a long time not to see beauty in a
black way. But now we are entering a time when
finally women like me can know that we are
beautiful. ”

Horta, Miss Brazil, Top 20
The
Brazilian Julia Horta was ranked among the 20 most
beautiful, but did not advance until the final
round.
